Monday night in LA: St. Louis’ John Maxfield at the Whiskey
posted by rob getzschman on November 13th, 2009

Rare is it that you get a St. Louis touring act all the way out here to LA — in fact, since I moved here, I’ve only caught one act from St. Louis, Riddle of Steel. (Seriously, go check out “Deeper Still”.) Only I didn’t really catch them, because they were at On The Rox, and On The Rox switched the lineup the night of the show, so I got there just as they were finishing. And now they’re broken up and I’ll never see them again. Thanks, On The Rox. :( ((((

So here’s some St. Louis redemption Monday night, my prolific and multi-talented friend John Maxfield, who’s put out six albums (including a double-album), and played tirelessly in the hometown. John’s always had a knack for smart pop in the vein of REM, and his ability to flow between guitar, piano, drums, sax and other instruments liberates his super-catchy songwriting. Currently he’s pimping his latest album, The Status Quo, which I hope to pick up Monday night at the Whiskey.

Honestly, I just discovered this show today via Facebook, so it’s caught me by surprise to find him out West. I don’t think I’ve seen him in person since he kindly laid some overdubs for my fifth album in 2005 (hear all the organ, electric guitar and bells on “Old-Ass Man”). So get out on a Monday night! Peep John Maxfield, St. Louis musical wunderkind, right here in Hollywood!
